Pumping vs. cleaning
People use the two words interchangeably, and for most homes a proper pump-out is a cleaning. The difference shows up in tanks that have gone a long time between services: the sludge layer packs down and the scum layer hardens, and simply pumping the liquid leaves a lot behind. Cleaning means breaking that material up and removing it, so the full capacity of the tank is restored.
When a tank needs a thorough cleaning
- It has been many years, or nobody knows when it was last pumped.
- You just bought the home and want a clean starting point.
- Drains are slow or the system has backed up.
- A repair or inspection requires a fully empty tank.
What we check while it is open
An empty tank is the best chance to see its condition. We look at the inlet and outlet baffles, the condition of the tank walls and lid, and whether liquid is flowing back from the drain field, which can point to a drain field problem. If something needs attention we tell you plainly and leave the decision with you.
